A metabolite of glycyrrhizin is beta-glycyrrhetinic acid. In large quantities this substance can cause negative reactions. An increase in blood pressure, headache and dizziness are the result. Cardiovascular and hypertensive patients are at risk. The Federal Office of Public Health recommends a maximum intake of 100 mg (0.1 g) of glycyrrhizin per day. Licorice is used in a variety of Chinese formulas. The daily dose rarely exceeds the 100 mg limit of glycyrrhizin.
